By evening, I found myself searching for a stranger to be the subject of my video presentation. As I wandered around the Siddhivinayak Temple, I encountered an elderly man, approximately 80 years old, who offered me Prasada. I was consumed with gratitude, addressing him as "Dhanyawad Kakaji." His reaction surprised me – he stared at me intently and began to cry. Confused, I asked him what had happened. After a moment, he replied that it had been a long time since he had heard the word "Dhanyawad" (thank you), and it injured him deeply.
Feeling a mix of emotions, I guided him to sit on the temple stairs and offered him some water, which he drank with heavy breaths. We sat in silence for a while before he began to speak. He shared with me that his son worked in Germany, earning a monthly salary of 13 lakhs rupees.
Sadly, old man's wife, the son's mother, had passed away the previous year. He had called his son to conduct the Shraddha rituals, urging him to visit India as soon as possible. However, his son replied callously that he didn't have time to come, even though it was his own mother's funeral rites. In response, the elderly man asked his son rhetorically, "Wasn't she your mother?" His son's cold reply, stating that he must Dhanyawad them for being his parents as mother and father, brought tears to the old man's eyes once again.
The encounter left me with a heavy heart, realising the depth of pain and loneliness that can exist even within families.
